Thousands protest drone attacks in Wana

WANA, Jan 5: Thousands of Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen held a demonstration here on Saturday to record their protest against the killing of their militant commander in a drone strike and demanded of the United Nations to declare the United States as a terrorist state for its wanton actions.

The protesters holding banners and placards chanted slogans against the US and demanded of the government to take steps for stopping drone strikes. The traders also kept their shops and markets shut to protest against the drone attack that also claimed lives of several other people.

Speakers on the occasion said that the US had been violating Pakistan’s sovereignty by carrying out drone strikes and targetting local residents. They said that Maulvi Nazir was a peace-loving tribal leader and had strived hard to restore peace in South Waziristan’s Wana region.

They said that by targeting peaceful people the US wanted to perpetuate terror. They also castigated the government for its inaction on drone strikes and demanded immediate steps for stopping them.

They said that all tribes in Wana were peaceful and they would continue to work for peace. They alleged that some elements within the army, based in Wana, were out to sow the seeds of discord and warned that this could have serious repercussions for peace and security in the region. They demanded of the army authorities to take notice of this.
