Ajmal Pahari arrested again

KARACHI, Jan 30: Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested Ajmal Pahari, once wanted in more than 100 murder cases, as a suspect in four murder cases, days after he was released from prison.

A senior official said Ajmal was arrested in Federal B Area by the Jauharabad police as a suspect, and an initial investigation suggested his alleged involvement in at least four more murder cases.

“The findings suggest that he was wanted in four cases lodged under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code with the Liaquatabad, Korangi and Bilal Colony police stations,” said SSP Amir Farooqi of Gulberg Town.

“Further investigation is under way and the due legal process will be followed to produce him before the relevant court.”

Ajmal was released from prison on Jan 18 after he filed a petition in the Sindh High Court against his detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance. The court had issued notices to the additional chief secretary (home) and others.

He had submitted in the petition that he was arrested on March 18, 2011 and implicated in 15 criminal cases. He was later acquitted in 11 cases and granted bail in the remaining four cases. —Staff Reporter
