LAHORE, Feb 24: Long shot bay horse Malik Gee stormed to victory in the Native Tune Cup which was the highlight of an eight-event card during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

Confidently ridden by jockey Aamir Pervez and trained by Abdul Rasheed, Malik Gee got the better of bay filly Wood Berry by four lengths in the event over 1,300 metres with the 40-100 favourite bay colt Subah Sadiq a dismal third, another four lengths back among a dozen starters.

The winner clocked one minute 21 seconds for the race distance while defying the crushing weight of nine stones eight pounds he carried on her back on a rain-soaked turf track.

In the supporting event, Bay filly Penzy, ridden smartly by jockey M. Hanif, led all the way home to land the Trace Hit Cup run over 1,300 metres.

The victory capped a marvellous week end for Hanif who earlier piloted home chestnut horse Baba Gee and bay colt Sufyan Prince in the third and fourth races, respectively to complete a hat-trick of victories.

Leading trainer Tauqir Ahmed continued his successful march on the trainers’ statistics table for the current season by saddling bay horse Adonis to a comfortable win for owner Sheikh Umar Zaheer in the seventh race.

Tauqir is now leads with 29 victories to date with Mohammad Afzal, who sent out four winners on Sunday, second with 24 triumphs, followed by Sohail Aziz (19) and Amjad Ali II (18).
