Contempt notices issued to Zardari, Ashraf in dual nationality case

ISLAMABAD: The apex court of Pakistan Wednesday issued contempt of court notices to President Asif Ali Zardari and former premier Raja Pervez Ashraf for not implementing its orders pertaining to dual nationality case, DawnNews reported.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, will hear the case on Thursday.

Notices were also issued to Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, Attorney General Irfan Qadir and Senator Rehman Malik.

Mehmood Akhtar, the petitioner, had filed separate petitions pleading the court to indict the said dignitaries over reappointing former interior minister Rehman Malik as senator.

Last month, the court had inquired from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about the reasons for not disqualifying the dual-nation lawmakers and asked as to why were criminal cases not proceeded against the former members of provincial and national assemblies, when they had submitted their resignations.
