Turf accountants benefit on day of upsets

KARACHI, April 14: Turf accountants had a field day as all but one outsider’s reigned supreme by lowering the colours of favourites in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

After filly Shandar Baby obliged punters by winning the opener, favourites bit the dust in the following four races to the surprise of punters.

With a win under her belt, Shandar Baby made it two on trot galloping to a splendid six-and-a-half lengths victory over colt Hit The Target. Lucky Lyna, a bay horse from Lahore, was third three-and-a-half lengths behind while another bay horse Subah-Ba-Khair completed the board among seven starters.

Candy Apple, a six-year-old mare with no form worth, surprised all and sundry by getting the better of fancied filly Eye Noor by two lengths and a quarter to pick up spoils in the second race. Candy Apple was ridden home by Pervaiz Ali.

In a repeat performance, four-year-old bay filly Protector defeated mare Lolly For Dolly by four-and-a-half lengths to land the third race with Zaki Zakir astride.

Mare Love For Sale created quite a stir while overcoming Jungle De Malka by half-a-length to win the fourth race as favourite Phenominal was placed third.

Filly Dream Girl made amends for successive loses while landing the fifth race which was also feature event. Ridden by champion jockey Mohammad Essa, she overcame Babu by two-and-a-half lengths for the honours.
