Ban on Basant in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA, Feb 11: The district government and the city tehsil council have decided in principle to ban Basant celebrations scheduled for Feb 20.

The decision was taken at separate meetings of the district government and the city tehsil council here on Tuesday. The meetings were presided over by District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha and City Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad. The district coordination officer and other senior officers also participated.

The meetings hailed Rawalpindi Nazim’s decision to ban Basant celebrations by declaring it un-Islamic.

The participants in the meeting expressed concern over the loss of lives in Lahore on the occasion of Basant besides wastage of millions of rupees on kite flying.

They said that Basant was the tradition of the Hindus which should be banned completely.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Majlis Amal and other religious parties have threatened that their activists would not allow anyone to celebrate Basant in and around the city.

The baton carrying activists of the Shabab-i-Milli and other religious parties would patrol city roads on Feb 20.
