Stamp on Fazal Mahmood

THE philatelic bureau of Pakistan post office issues commemorative postal stamps of various denominations to mark different national/international events and also to pay tribute to prominent personalities of the country in different fields.

In the sphere of sports, the great name of the legendry cricketer and medium fast bowler, blue eyed Fazal Mahmood is well-known to every Pakistani.

He died in May 2005 at age 78. He was dubbed Oval Hero in 1954 when he captured 12 wickets for 99 runs to allow Pakistan to register their first Test victory against hosts England on their soil.

Fazal Mahmood has gone down as immortal in the annals of cricket history and left behind his indelible imprint and legacy as a great sportsman.

He played an instrumental role in getting Pakistan the test status, and also had the honour to lead the team in many test series.

His spotless cricketing career spanning about 12 years testifies to his vital contribution to Pakistan cricket.

It is, therefore, suggested that Pakistan postal authorities, in recognition of the services of Fazal Mahmood, issue a beautiful commemorative stamp on the occasion of his fifth death anniversary in May.

It would be the most befitting way to pay homage to the famous cricket stalwart of the past.
