Work begins on women`s varsity in Multan

MULTAN, June 19 Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani laid foundation stone of a women's university and a cadet college here on Saturday.

An amount of Rs1,144 million will be spent on the women's university and Rs410 million on the cadet college.

The prime minister inaugurated Nawabpur and Ghausul Azam roads, which were built with a cost of Rs764 million and Rs346 million, respectively.

Speaking to a gathering on this occasion, Gilani said people would be provided relief and issues like price hike, unemployment, energy crisis and law and order would be addressed on priority. “With better vision and strategy, we will overcome all problems.”The prime minister said the Pakistan People's Party fulfilled its pledges to end dictatorship and restore the 1973 Constitution to its original form. “We ended dictatorship through dialogue and forced General Musharraf to resign.”

Gilani said the PPP adopted the policy of reconciliation, took along all political forces and evolved consensus on the 18th Amendment before its passage from the parliament.

He said respect of the parliament had been restored and the world had acknowledged Pakistan as a democratic country.

He said the Benazir Income Support Programme would be made more effective. He said the nation was united in the fight against terrorism. He said Pakistani students studying abroad wanted to be treated with respect. He said terrorists maligned Islam, which had nothing to do with terrorism.

Gilani said he would lay the foundation stone of Benazir Bhutto's memorial in Multan on June 21 and added that an engineering university would be set up in the city. At present there was no such university in the region and students had to go to Lahore for engineering studies. About 125 acres of land had been allocated for the project to be overseen by the Federal Ministry of Education and Higher Education Commission.

Minister for Education Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali and MPA Syed Ahmad Mujtaba Gilani were also present.—APP
