Shujaat says Musharraf has no future in politics

ISLAMABAD, June 13 Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has predicted that the former president Pervez Musharraf has no future in politics and, rejecting a claim by the general's top aides said that no one from the PML-Q is keen to join the Musharraf-led All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).

Some leaders of the newly-formed All Pakistan Muslim League, including Maj-Gen (retd) Rashid Qureshi, recently visited some main cities and held press conferences where they claimed that several leaders and activists of PML-Q, PML-N and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf had contacted them and showed willingness to join the APML.

Talking to this correspondent on Sunday, Chaudhry Shujaat said the PML-Q started distancing itself from Mr Musharraf after the military dictator decided to use force to resolve the stand-off with militants holed up in Lal Masjid. He said scores of innocent people were killed in the military operation, which was carried out only because of Musharraf's stubborn and unflinching attitude.

Holding Musharraf responsible for the Lal Masjid operation, Chaudhry Shujaat said the general refused to listen to voices of sanity and reconciliation.

The PML-Q leader advised Gen Musharraf to give up the idea of launching a new party, saying that generals without uniform had never been successful in the country's politics.

He said that launching another faction of Muslim League could not help resolve the country's problems but reuniting all factions of the party was the key to achieving that goal.

Chaudhry Shujaat, who earlier blamed the former president for his defeat in the last general election, said he would take every step needed to reunite the Muslim League factions for the greater good of the country.

He said the former president would not find even people to sit with him on the stage if he returned and attempted to launch his party.

The PML-Q leader expressed the confidence that PML-Q would emerge a stronger party in the next election as a large number of the party candidates had lost the 2008 general election only with small margins.

He said PML-Q would oppose it when the budget was put to vote in the National Assembly.
