SUKKUR: Derailment suspends railways traffic
SUKKUR, March 26: Railway traffic was suspended on Wednesday after derailment of six bogies of the Multan-bound 29-Up Shah Rukne Alam Express near the Mirpur Mathelo station.
Trains were subsequently detained at different railway stations because of the derailment incident.
Ayaz Dareshani, DPO of the Sukkur railway division, said that two lower AC parlor bogeys, a power van and an economy class bogie were derailed at about 4pm on Wednesday.
A high-level inquiry has been ordered to determine the causes of the derailment.
Hundreds of villagers, who had rushed to the site of the accident, and helped passengers disembark from the train.
Eyewitnesses told this correspondent that several persons, who had been injured in the incident, were treated by the railways’ medical officer. No serious injury was reported.
The DPO said that the derailment had affected about 170 passengers and alternative arrangements were made for them to send them to the respective destinations.
According to the railways’ control room, the derailment had delayed trains, including 13-Up Awam Express, 5-Up Tezro, 9-Up Shaheen Express, 23-Up Quetta Express, 33-Up Super Express, 28-Down Shalimar Express and 30-Down Shah Rukne Alam Express.
The deputy superintendent, Sukkur, said that the railway tracks were expected to be cleared by 10pm but restoration of railways traffic would take some more time.
