Sadia stuns top seed to enter national badminton semis

KARACHI Fifth seed Sadia Arshad of Wapda pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament when she toppled top seed and defending champion Ayesha Akram of National Bank in three sets to reach women's singles semi-finals of the 52nd National Badminton Championship at the PSB Coaching Centre.

Sadia conceded the opener 17-21 only to storm back and turn the tables on her opponent by taking the next two sets 21-15, 21-18.

'It's a happiest moment of my career as my hard work has paid off,' a jubilant international Sadia told Dawn after emerging victorious.

Sadia said though she had beaten her (Ayesha) once before at Sargodha last year but it was not a ranking tournament.

Applauding Sadia's performance, Ayesha said it was her (Sadia) day and she won.

It may be mentioned that Ayesha had lost to Karachi's upcoming Sara Khan in the final of the last national championship held at Islamabad.

Sadia is now drawn to meet Palwashah Bashir who was home against Uzma Butt 21-13 (retired).
