Call to settle IDPs in Karachi, Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, Sept 21 People across the Sindh observed Tuesday as a 'protest day' against the government failure to rehabilitate flood-displaced people in Hyderabad and Karachi.

Rallies were taken out in major cities of the province on the call of four nationalist parties - Sindh Tarraqi Passand Party (STPP), Sindh United Party (SUP), Awami Tehreek (AT) and Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM).

In Hyderabad activists of all four parties took out a rally from district council which culminated outside local press club. The activists marched through Hyder chowk, DPO office chowk and Risala road.

Chief of the JSQM, Bashir Khan Qureshi said that Sindh was not inundated by floods but by the rulers themselves. He said that hundreds of thousands of displaced people were being subjected to humiliation instead of being provided relief.

He criticized the Sindh government for failing to fulfill its promise of settling the survivors in Hyderabad and Karachi instead they were being baton-charged and tear-gassed.

Bashir Qureshi called for setting up a commission to probe into the breaches caused by the feudal elements of the PPP and awarding punishment to those found guilty.

President of the AT, Ayaz Latif Palejo hitting out at the PPP ministers for playing a dangerous game with floodwater said that now the entire Sindh was bearing the consequences of their selfish acts.

How heart-wrenching it is to see poor people waiting in queue for hours together for a morsel of cooked rice while the government is least bothered, he said.

He accused the Sindh Governor of transferring the relief goods collected at the Governor House to Multan, instead.

Reminding the ANP, MQM, PML-N and Sunni Tehreek of their welcome gesture towards the victims of Swat, he despised their cold attitude towards Sindh brethren who were hit by the floods. Not a single camp was set up by these parties indicating their deception, he said while criticizing the statement of the US Envoy Richard Halbrook on dams in Makli. He said that the US Envoy has no right to speak on such issues.

Palejo accused the revenue officials of indulging in corruption in the name of relief activities.

The SUP leader, Dr Dodo Mahri said that the water of Tori breach had flooded areas as far as Sehwan but still the PPP men were not ready to allow the passage of water destroying homes and agriculture land.

Leader of the STPP, Ghulam Mohammad said that only nationalists were with the flood hit people and also demanded a compensation of Rs5 lakh for each family.

Rallies were also taken out in Larkana, Nawabshah, Mithi, Badin, Thull and Thatta by the activists of nationalist parties.

They demanded rehabilitation on war footing.
