ISLAMABAD The Ministry of Interior has ordered increased security for Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, apparently because of the current tense atmosphere and government's concern for his safety.
In a letter, the ministry has asked police to maintain additional vigilance during the movement of the chief justice, especially on the route from his residence to the Supreme Court. “In the prevailing situation, security of the CJP is of utmost importance, particularly in the federal capital,” a source told Dawn.
The letter apparently issued on the basis of intelligence reports also suggested that five to 10 CCTV cameras be installed at important points like the Punjab House. Police have been asked to get technical assistance from Nadra for installation of the cameras and deploy extra personnel at the CJ's residence and the Supreme Court building.
JURISTS AWARD Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry will leave for Singapore on Feb 28 to receive the International Jurists Award 2009 in recognition of his contributions in the field of administration of justice.
Minister Mentor of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew will confer the prestigious award on the chief justice.
Other recipients of the award include Chief Justice of Singapore Justice Chan Sek Keong and Chief Justice of India Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.
Justice Iftikhar will also attend the International Conference of Jurists on Sea Global Warming and Rule of Law, organised by the International Council of Jurists (ICJ).
The ICJ president has requested Justice Iftikhar to honour the event as a special guest of honour.
The ICJ is an organisation of jurists working for promotion of administration of justice and healthy development of law. It is headed by Justice Awn Al-Khasawnch of the International Court of Justice.
