KARACHI: Attack on MNA: Police team to visit Turbat

KARACHI, June 6 A police investigation team is heading to Turbat, as the authorities have broadened the scope of a probe into a parcel bomb attack on the DHA residence of a legislator from Balochistan on Friday, which injured three of his relatives and a servant.

Officials said the police party would coordinate with the local police in Turbat to draw a sketch of the man who actually delivered the parcel to the servants of Mir Yaqub Bizenjo, a member of the National Assembly and the Balochistan National Party (Awami), at his home.

“According to the Bomb Disposal Squad's findings, nearly 200 grams of local explosives were used in the parcel bomb,” said an official. “It also included ball bearings and some other metal parts, which could have caused more damage than they actually did.”

SSP (Investigation) South Dr Amir Shaikh said that the team was already coordinating with their counterparts in Turbat and had received input from the servants of the legislator who received the parcel.

“Initial questioning of the servants - Saleem and Nawaz - suggests that they could recognise that man who pretended to be a postman and handed over the parcel to them,” he said. The investigators would acquire their assistance to draw sketches, he added.

Asked about the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), who claimed responsibility for the attack on Mr Bizenjo and his family, Dr Sheikh said investigations were still open and it was too early to reach any conclusions.

“We are also examining their (Mr Bizenjo's) business links, family enmity and obviously one can't rule out claims from any party or an act of terrorism,” he added.
