Fertiliser ship runs aground in Gwadar Port

KARACHI, Dec 8 A vessel loaded with fertiliser from Ukraine ran aground in the inner channel of the Gwadar Port on Tuesday and an attempt to salvage the ship will be made on Wednesday during the high tide, official sources told Dawn from Gwadar.

Sources said that the vessel 'JPO Delphinus' of Liberian flag was being brought into the harbour by the pilot of the port operator, Port of Singapore Authority International (PSAI), when the incident took place.

The last port of the vessel loaded with 51,027.481 tons Urea was Yuzhny, Ukraine with a draft of 12.1 meter.

The vessel drifted near N-2 Red Buoy inside the channel.

However, officials were not ready to confirm or deny if the channel had been closed after the incident.

The vessel is fairly new as it was built in the 2009, they added.

Port and shipping circles wonder as to who would be responsible for the incident-- the port authority or the operator of the port—because during cruise in the channel the captain hands over the ship to the pilot of the port or its operator.
