Hockey goalie undergoes eye surgery

CHENNAI, July 19 Indian hockey goalkeeper Baljit Singh underwent emergency eye surgery on Saturday after suffering a serious injury while training with a golf ball at the national camp.

The 28-year-old's injury is a blow as India, aiming to revive their fortunes after failing to qualify for last year's Olympics, embark on a European tour starting on July 24. P.R. Sreejesh has replaced Baljit in new coach Jose Brasa's squad.

Baljit was struck on the right eye while undergoing specific golf ball training with the goalkeeping coach on Friday and suffered damage to the retina, cornea and lens of his eye.—Reuters
