Habib Bank, Multan, Sialkot score three-day victories
KARACHI, Oct 12 Pakistan ace leg-spinner Danish Kaneria finished with a match bag of 11-131 as Habib Bank trounced Karachi Whites by seven wickets on the penultimate day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship Group 'A' match at the NBP Sports Complex here on Monday.
Kaneria, who took 5-72 in the first innings, snared 6-59 in 23 overs to send Karachi Whites tumbling to 172 all out in the second innings. Slow left-armer Abdur Rehman claimed 3-59 to end up with 6-109 in the match.
Needing 57, Habib Bank lost three wickets before claiming 12 points for their well-earned victory.
PIA, meanwhile, made a fitting reply on the placid National Stadium track by amassing 333-3 in response to KRL's first-innings total of 468. Test opener Khurram Manzoor led the way with an unbeaten 156 - the young right-hander's 10th first-class ton - after PIA resumed at 86-1. Khurram's 372-ball knock in a marathon stay of 507 minutes included 20 boundaries.
Kamran Sajid scored a patient 70 (206 balls, seven fours) during the 194-run second-wicket stand with Khurram. Stand-in captain Faisal Iqbal was on batting on 51 when play ended for the day with PIA still needing 136 for first innings lead.
Khalid Latif, meanwhile, slammed his maiden first-class double century to help Karachi Blues reach 458 against Peshawar on the second day of the Group 'B' tie at Rawalpindi's KRL Stadium. Resuming at 159 in a total of 251-4, Khalid carried his bat to make 254 - a knock that featured 34 fours and four sixes.
Peshawar were reeling at 82-5 in reply.
Shahid Qambrani scored a career-best 150 not out as Hyderabad took first innings lead of 28 runs against hosts Islamabad after piling up 466 in the tall-scoring Group 'B' match at the Diamond Club Ground. Islamabad then collected 242-3 in their second turn with opener Umair Khan (103) and Ashar Zaidi (85) adding 153 for the unbroken fourth-wicket partnership.
Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore Reigning champions Sialkot and Multan also scored comfortable three-day victories to set early pace in Group 'B' of the championship.
Sialkot whipped Faisalabad by an innings and four runs in their own backyard while Multan thrashed Lahore Ravi by innings and 31 runs at the LCCA Ground with slow left-armer Zulfiqar Babar capturing 6-46 to follow his 5-84 in the first innings.
Multan, who resumed at 332-7, made 386 in the first innings with Naved Yasin making an unbeaten 103. Former international Junaid Zia claimed 5-90 for the home side.
National Bank were closing in on an emphatic win after reducing Lahore Shalimar to 131-5 in the second innings at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Helped by Fawad Alam's century, National Bank posted a mammoth 535-6 declared to take a huge first-innings lead of 296 runs. Fawad, the Pakistan left-hander, scored 126 (197 balls, 11 fours) after resuming at 46. Pakistan wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal hit a breezy 52 not out off 44 balls with four fours and one six.
Earlier, Salman Butt added just five more runs before he was dismissed for 177 (263 balls, 21 fours).
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) staged a great comeback against Wapda in Faisalabad. After conceding a lead of 68 on the first innings, SNGPL hit back through paceman Asad Ali, who claimed 6-38, to bowl out Wapda for 258 in the second innings.SNGPL then completed a fine day by finishing on 149 for no wicket with Mohammad Hafeez (51) and Naeemuddin (74) in hot pursuit of a target of 327.
