LAHORE: Legendary folk singer Reshma, passed away in Lahore on Sunday morning, DawnNews reported.
According to the hospital sources, Reshma had been in coma for a month after being diagnosed with throat cancer years ago.
Born in Bikaner, Rajasthan to Banjara family around 1947, Reshma's tribe migrated to Karachi shortly after partition.
Having received no formal education, she was only 12 when she was was spotted singing at Shahbaz Qalander’s shrine by a television and radio producer, who arranged for her to record “Laal Meri” on Pakistan radio.
The song was an instant hit, and Reshma went on to become one of the most popular folk singers of Pakistan, appearing on television in the 1960s, as well as recording songs for both the Pakistani and Indian film industry.
Some of her famous numbers include "Dama Dam Mast Kalandar", "Hai O Rabba nahion lagda dil mera", "Ankhiyan no rehen de ankhyan de kol kol" and “Lambi Judai”.
Reshma was awarded several national awards and she also holds the prestigious awards 'Sitara-i-Imtiaz' and 'Legends Of Pakistan' given by the President of Pakistan.
Many people of note reacted with sadness on Twitter after learning of Reshma's death.
Former Junoon guitarist, Salman Ahmed, tweeted "a voice of passion not of this earth (RIP) 'Hayo Rabba'".
Indian journalist Farzana Versey tweeted, "She broke the silence of the desert. #Reshma. A voice so wounded, pain became the song."
Author and journalist Sadia Dehlvi tweeted, "Just heard of singer Reshma's death. Recall meeting and listening to her several times over decades. May her soul rest in peace."
She his survived by a son Umair and daughter Shazia.

Very sad news! She was gem of a singer. Her voice had an emotional, heart string pulling feel. Though she lived in Pakistan after partition, she was born in Rajasthan. Folk singers from Rajasthan have rich voice and great heritage. There must be something special in soil there. Rest in peace Reshma. You will be missed by music lovers in Pakistan, India and beyond!

It is a sad news for the nation. Reshma was unique artiste. the voice of desert has been silenced. she was natural born singer. Very few singers are born with such talents. her voice had pathos and great depth of clarity that felt so pleasant and melodious.
She was discovered by the legendary Radio producer at a Saint's shrine where she was singing. He brought the real talent in her . He did a great service to the nation, by introducing her to the world. she was a raw diamond that was polished by him.
She sang the folk songs and made them immortal; She reins the world of music for decades. Her rendition of lyrics was exceptionally . beautiful .in the singing field. She ruled it alone for decades to come.
She has been paid rich tributes by the famous singers like Shafqat Ali Khan anf Surraya Khanum It is disheartening and pathetic that no one from the film industry has reached her family house to offer the condolences,
She will be remembered for ever as the Balbul- e- Sahara . May Allah rest her soul in peace and eternal tranquility. and give patience and courage to her family to bear the irreparable
loss.

my heartiest condolences to her immediate family, and to her extended family, the entire Pakistan. we have lost one of our most beautiful gems. it was *our* good fortune to be her hamwatan. there has not been a week that i didnt turn on one of her performances on you tube. an alto of rare quality, pleasant on its own no matter what words she sang. fame never changed her attitude, illness never change her fortitude...what a human! baree lambi judai paa gaye o reshma ji. as pervez mehdi sang to you in 'main jana perdes' "rab rakhay khair te milaan gay kadi akay". may Rabb Sohna bless your soul.

Reshma was the Queen of the Folk Melodies, her voice was immatchable, although she is no more among us but her beautiful numbers will always remain in our hearts. She was a wonderful person besides a singer.

If it is really so then why all the politicians keep on rushing to America for treatment even for very minor ailments. From Jay Prakash Narayan, Late Prime Minister VP Singh to Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and all powerful Mrs Sonia Gandhi.
Mr Satish, a sweet voice left us and this is a time of mourning and not for point scoring.

Not sure about her family financial situation and we should consider setting up a fund at least for her family to have better financial life so they should feel proud of her mother...She did not enjoy any financial security and other than awards, not much financial gains from her singing.
We must remember such great singers by supporting them financially.
