Hindu burial in 'Muslim graveyard' sparks protests in Badin

BADIN: The situation in Tando Bago town of Badin district became tense following the burial of a 75-year-old Hindu man, in a local graveyard of Bachal Shah.
Late on Wednesday night, a few people of the town dug the grave and took out the body of the resident of village Yar Mohammad Lund, some four kilometres off the Tando Bago town. The body was buried by his relatives on Monday.
But the body was reburied in the same place by the local police on the wee hours of Thursday, following which the clerics belonging to various mosques of the town made announcements that a Hindu was buried again in their graveyard.
The burial infuriated the Muslim community of the town and its adjoining areas, who gathered in the town and staged a sit-in on the Bago Canal bridge.
Speaking to media persons the protesters threatened to dig out the body from the grave again.
The protesters further claimed that a decision had been reached nearly four years ago according to which Hindus would not bury their deceased in the same part of the graveyard.
It is pertinent to mention that this graveyard had been shared since many years by both the Hindus and Muslims of the area.
There was only a small wall erected by a former taluka Nazim of Tando Bago to separate the parts of the graveyard.
Strict security measures were taken by Badin's district administration to control the law and order situation in the town.
Heavy contingents of the police have been deployed in and around the graveyard under the supervision of DSP Tando Bago.
The relatives of the Hindu man, who was buried in the graveyard, spoke to Dawn.com and claimed that the deceased was buried near the grave of his father.
The people of various rights groups voiced their concern over the issue and demanded that the government functionaries should take security measures for the minority communities.
On Oct 6, in a similar incident the body of another Hindu man was dug out of the grave and thrown away, in a local graveyard of Haji Fakir in Pangrio town of Badin district.

What a shame they cant even let a dead man rest in peace, keep digging up his body and reburying it again. Pakistan is becoming a land of bigots, so what if a Hindu is buried next to a Muslim or vice versa? So what?
By the way I thought Hindus cremate their dead? I didn't know they buried?

In United States, Muslims burry their dead in Christian graveyards and I dont see any hate or protests. Sorry but Muslims in Pakistan are very intolerant. They expect the world to respect them but give very little in return.

Burial, instead of cremations, is practiced by some Hindus in some parts of Pakistan, especially Sindh. It is an old practice and might be linked to the influence of patron sufi saints of those areas. Unfortunately I can't find a good reference regarding how the practice originated.

Forget/ignore all of the peaceful and compassionate examples we've had in Islam and practice this disgusting hate?! A Muslim is a Nobleman, this is what my parents taught me when I was a child in late forties and early fifties, at a time when Pakistan has just become independent. According to them a Muslim is kind, honest, carrying and a person of high moral character. To them JINNAH was such a person.
Nowadays reading the news and articles in DAWN, I wonder where that Nobleman has gone. Were my parents living in the illusion when they thought about such a nobleman.

There had been several religion transformation in history if we pick, for example, many hindus had been converted to Islam by mughal rulers. The same is happened to some communities who are left in Pakistan also.For them they have accepted few and remained hindus as a whole.
But this seems very barbaric, and also would appreciate the response of local police as well.

Surprisingly, many of us [Muslims] don't follow Islam nor practice but when it comes to such issue they always think they have to right to be might. For God sake, our people don't even make graveyards in their colonies and now fights over such issues. And what difference is it going to make if we are buried with a Hindu, Parsi, Christian or any one else...we all will be trialled on our deeds not where we were buried. At least show decency and learn to love other human beings as our Prophet (PBUH) taught us too.

Hindu religion requires burning the dead on a pier along with his wife/wives.
The Hindu should be allowed this freedom of religion as is provided in Pak Constitution and Islam. They should not be forced to bury their dead among non-Hindus. This will solve this kind of discrimination against the Hindu minority.
Hindus should be free to practice their religion in Pakistan as was the wish of The Quaid.

I do not know the ruling on burying a non Muslim in a Muslim graveyard. But I am sure a dead person must be respected. In other religion there are stance especially in the house of a Brahman where even a low cast Hindu is not suppose to enter their kitchen or touch their food. It is totally out of bond for a Muslim to enter their kitchen.

The really ironic part is that if we dig (pardon the pun) deeper, we will will find that this was a graveyard of a people that, although "Hindus", did not cremate their dead, And that many of them became Muslim, hence continued to share the same graveyard. They then continued to share it with the later arrivals, such as the Lund Baloch (Saraiki-speaking, they stretch all the way deep into Rajasthan). Perhaps what the original clans should do is to declare it as a clan graveyard and restrict it to the descendents of all the locals that existed before the arrival of the Baloch. Those are the people known as as Habbar key Sindhi. That will teach the clerics.

The comments show the common man of Pakistan is no different from the common man of India. Although sectarian and religious strife is on the rise, there is no dearth of peaceful people in Pakistan. I have so many Pakistani friends and have never had any problem with any of them. Pakistan has the potential to destroy peace in the South Asian region if the power hungry fanatical mullahs get things their way, but the only ones who can stop are not the drones, but the youth of Pakistan. The comments clearly show the youth are leaning towards moderacy and this is good news for neighbors India, China and Afghanistan.

Funny how Hindus are treated in Pakistan when India does not differentiate its citizens based on religion. Our ex president, Vice President, primary nuclear scientist and many more indoor taint people are Muslims... But I don't see any Hindu at a good position in Pakistan. And then the pakis try to find faults in India. It's just very funny..... And sad at the same time that a person in Pakistan cannot be provided with a tiny strip of land for his burial just because he/she happens to be Hindu.

Hindu should have been cremated, and then his ashes could have been buried here. He was born of this soil of this land, and had a right to go back in to the same soil. Soil never decides that here I am Muslim and the there I am Hindu.
