KARACHI: Former Pakistan Test umpire Ferozeuddin Butt died here on Friday after protracted illness. He was 72.

Feroze supervised the lone Test between Pakistan and New Zealand here at the National Stadium in 1990 alongside legendary Pakistan Test umpire Mahboob Shah.

Feroze also supervised four One-day Internationals besides overseeing a significant number of first-class cricket matches.

He leaves behind four daughters, two sons and a widow.

The deceased is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday.

“Feroze had complete command over the rules of the game and he held good integrity,” Mahboob Shah said while condoling his death.

After retiring from the game, Feroze also worked as cricket writer in monthly magazine Cricket Herald.

“Feroze was a thorough gentlemen who possessed great knowledge of the game,” Aziz Rehmatullah, a cricket writer and editor of the magazine, commented.

Former KCCA president Syed Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari also condoled Feroze’s demise while acknowledging his contribution as an umpire for over three decades.
