UN urges Pakistan to halt executions

UNITED NATIONS: UN chief Ban Ki-moon is pressing Pakistan to end capital punishment and restore a moratorium on the death penalty the government lifted in terror cases following the Taliban school massacre in Peshawar.
Ban spoke with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday to express his condolences after the slaughter last week that left 150 people dead, including 134 children.
However, “while fully recognising the difficult circumstances, the secretary general urged the government of Pakistan to stop the executions of convicts and re-impose the moratorium on the death penalty,” Ban's office said in a statement.

Prime Minister Sharif promised that “all legal norms would be respected,” the statement added.
The prime minister ended the six-year moratorium on the death penalty, reinstating it for terrorism-related cases, in the wake of the deadliest terror attack in Pakistani history.
Pakistan plans to execute 500 militants in the coming weeks.

‘Extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary measure’
Pakistan, meanwhile, strongly reacted to the UN chief’s statement saying the country was “cognizant of its obligations under UN Human Rights Conventions/Covenants”.
“Execution of terrorists violates no international law,” FO spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said in a short statement issued in Islamabad.
A spokesman of the PM House said Pakistan respects the international community, but the country is passing through “extraordinary circumstances which demand extraordinary measures to be taken”.
“A peaceful Pakistan is in the best interest of the world,” the spokesman added.

This is a very difficult time in Pakistan, but ending moratorium on executions is not the answer to the problem. The problems are very deep rooted and the answer lies in education and justice reforms and overhauling of the corrupt system.

The state should never bow down either to the terrorists or those who are against the capital punishment in Pakistan. Justice must be done to the innocent blood spilled ruthlessly on daily basis and the monsters and their families must be given a clear message that there is a heavy price to be paid for their brutality. Also do not forget our security forces and their blood sacrifices in a very difficult time where they need the moral support if the state and its public to effectively counter act against the menace of militancy in the country.

World powers and United Nations has done nothing for Pakistanis who suffered because of terrorist acts.
Moratorium on the death penalty was a wrong decision. Although hanging few terrorist will not stop this menace as these people believe that by killing innocent people who they claim are infidels and that they will straight away go to Heavens but putting them to justice may relive some pains.
Thank you Mr. Moon for your advise, leave us alone as we know what is best for our country. If you want to serve humanity instead of wasting time on us do some thing for injustices done in other parts of world, like Kashmir, etc

Countries like Saudi Arabia take no unsolicited advices regarding their legal system from any country or person. Mr. Ban Ki-moon knows this fully well. Its only countries with weak leaderships thare are the recipient of such unsolicited advices. Mr. Ban Ki-moon would do well to focus his attention on major international issues like Kashmir, Palestine etc.

Pakistan is not the only coutry where we have capital punishment. Secretary General should ask US first to abolish that. But he won't.We are having extra ordinary circumstances in Pakistan which call for such actions. Does he want us to even fight terrorists ? Because they gonna get killed anyways. And is it not worth pondering why such countries / personalities are pressurizing only Pakistan to declare a moratorium on carrying out executions? I agree killing the low level terrorists will not solve the problem, but killing their leaders and spiritual guides will have a dramatic effect. These leaders live with complete impunity in the major cities.

While our country is plagued with this menace and needs to weed these characters as a deterrent.
There should be concerted effort by media, politicians and foreign office to drive this point across strongly.

It seems that the Pakistani Government has already stopped this. They only hanged people who attacked army. This shows the true intent of the government.
Why not hang all the people who were involved in the killing of thousands of Pakistanis, but again you know what, how many of us believe that the people the government is holding are true terrorists and not someone just picked off the street.

One fails to understand the rationale of what Moon says. How different is it from killing by Drone attack. It is just a difference in methodology and the procedure. And there is a benefit also. In case of Drone attack you just can not avoid collateral damage. In case of executions there is no collateral damage.

Why UN does not appeal to all nations alike who wage wars, invade another country at will, bomb where loss of civilian life as "collateral damage" occurs quite frequently? Why those lives lost are not important to UN and EU? Rohingyas get burned alive and murdered in Burma where no sactions takes place, UN keeps silence along with mighty nations who shake hands with the repressive regime leaders, forging trade relations and eager to have healthy bilateral relations. What a double standard UN maintains?

Well, I didn't like Mr. Ban ki Moon's suggestion. Terrorists don't deserve mercy and human rights don't apply to them. However, this should stop Pakistan from going to UN on Kashmir because when Pakistan asks for mediation, it should be willing to implement what UN says.

UN Chief does not feel the pain that Pakistan feels. He does not have a personal experience of terrorism. For him it is easy to propagate. Human rights can be claimed by humans only; the terrorists that kill innocent children are not humans; they are worse than animals and they need to be eliminated. Pakistan has taken a perfectly legal step. The UNSG should know that a repeat of this type of attack can break Pakistan. Pakistan's resolve to free the country of terrorists and terrorism is a welcome step to safeguard the country. A country in peace can progress and protect the well-being of its citizens. Those who oppose this step are unfair humans.

We should boycott all UN agencies bars on this statement. They do nothing about the aggression of the USA, Russia and India but dare say something about out executing the filth of our society. I am a veteran UN worker and based on this I have handed my resignation. I have achieved nothing working for them except nice passport privileges and business class flights .

Thats interesting. So why did they kill Osama Bin Laden? We kept him alive, our army was happy to do that - and you know what happened - our country was invaded by the USA - and polio eradication forever destroyed because they used a polio doctor to do the intelligence. So if you really want to keep them alive- you can invade us again and save them. We will keep on killing them until you do so. For some reason, I have more respect for the ethics of our politicians than the UN and USA.

It clearly shows you the double standards of the west when it comes to Pakistan. While USA and Saudi Arabia continue to execute the death penalty, the orders are given only to Pakistan. UN saying don't kill TTP terrorists, wow, I guess the cat is coming out of the bag. Pakistan Army please continue to do whatever it takes to finish these animals and don't worry too much about these so called human rights people.

I suggest Pakistan should stop death penalties if UN does the following:
1. ALL Guentanamo inmates illegally held by USA are unconditionally released.
2. ALL USA drone attaks in Pakistan territory be completely and permanently stopped.
3. USA should stop creating ALL extreme groups such as AlQaeda, Talibaan and ISIS in future.
