PM Nawaz expresses resentment over power outages

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday reprimanded Secretary Water and Power Younus Dagha over power outages in several parts of the country.
During the meeting with Dagha, the prime minister also expressed displeasure over the preliminary report submitted by the Secretary of Water and Power and directed him to address citizens' complaints at the earliest.
Power outages during Sehr and Iftar timings were reported from several cities across the country on Friday contrary to the federal government’s announcement of supplying uninterrupted electricity during these timings in the holy month.
Prolonged power outages of up to 20 hours were also reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which resulted in violent protests.

The premier had earlier “expressed resentment over power outages during Sehr and Iftar”, said a statement issued by the Prime Minister House last night.
He had sought a report and had directed the water and power ministry to immediately address the complaints.

Dagha's report on power outages, which was submitted to the PM today, said that the water and power ministry was able to provide uninterrupted electricity to about 75 to 80 per cent of areas in the country on the first day of Ramazan.
The report stated that there were difficulties in areas where Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) and Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) are situated. It said that both companies had received a large number of complaints from residents of the areas.

Citing the reason for power outages, the report said it was due to the severe heatwave in the country which has been ongoing for the past two to three days. It also said that there was an increase in the demand of electricity beyond 21,000 MW.
The secretary assured Prime Minister Nawaz that his ministry was fully aware of people's difficulties, adding that steps were being taken to continue the provision of electricity in Ramazan.

Our PM seems to be working as 'king', issuing so many statements just to placate the common masses. In reality of our parliamentary democracy set-up he is 'head' of the cabinet of ministers, and as such has more, if not equal, responsibility for successes / failures of the working of the cabinet.

PM very well knows that 'no load shedding during Sehri and Iftari' is simply NOT workable based on present supply and demand position of power generation and transmission system. However, he chooses to issue such statements off and on seemingly to fool the people that it is not his fault, if there is load shedding during Sehri and Iftar.

In the previous govt., a duff promise was made by Pervez Ashraf that all of Pakistan's power shortages will be a thing of the past by December 2009. He put the blame on Musharaf's govt for not producing a single additional mega Watt during their tenure. Come seven years later, under civilian rules the situation is even worse. NS will make another duff gesture and his supporters will buy into that and all will be forgotten and passed on to the next musical chair winner.

It is time to spend another 50 Billion on another metro project for 100,000 people while the country of 200 million suffers. Where is the power minster in this picture or anyone from the power distribution companies. What about anticipating the needs and planning ahead. I am sure there is another circular debt payment crisis looming as we discuss this. Why can't this government find any money for Neelum hydropower to add 1000MW of clean energy to the mix. What is the status of other projects?

Please ensure that you should get correct information about load shedding in major cities.
We are afraid that the group around you might start giving you fake newspapers just to keep you aloof until masses reach Prime Minister House like last year.

If one thinks very carefully and minutely without prejudice, at least to me it seems, the future is very bleak. No new investments have been planned to augment the power capacity, no new power plants have been planned, no study of how to stop transmission losses etc., We, I presume,are relying on Chinese to come and make investment in these areas. Pity.

Power plants and associated infrastructure needs huge capital investments. Pakistan hardly generates its own resources and spends most of the resources on defense. No party, or prime minister can change this situation unless people of Pakistan rise and ask that the spending priorities be changed and more internal resources are generated. Else every body as they say in USA is spinning the wheels.

Nawaz shareef paid Rs 480 billion to PPI immediately after assuming power. Circular debt is over Rs 600 billion again. Billions spent on Quaid e Azam solar park and Nandipur and self projection, electricity prices doubled and hardly any KW added to national grid. Thats nothing less than a scandal.

Knowing that hot summer season and Ramadan is around the corner, a responsible government should have prepared themselves, instead shading crocodile tears after the fact.

@noshin So job of our PM is to issue statements. Anyone can do same thing. What action have been taken by our worthy PM? The drama of Nandipur and Solar Park will not solve load shedding problem. Can Shahbaz Sharif tell what will be cost of solar power from the Solar Park - Rs per Unit (I understand this to be Rs. 19 per Unit), rate of return, payback period? The Govt is playing with the money from national exchequer. If it was Sharif's own money, will they invest it in such economically un-feasible projects.

What a wonderful Prime Minister we have. Everything that goes wrong in the country is someone else's doing. He has never accepted any responsibility for anything that doesn't work in the country. When you have family members, friends and "business associates" running the various departments within the government, how can he take any action against them?. What about Nandipur which is already producing surplus electricity and that solar park which by 2059 will generate 100 % power. I play chess with Pakistanis on Chess.com and they don't seem to have any shortage of electricity. Their computers don't go off.

Our production capacity is more than our requirement by most of people don't pay bills so they can't give money to companies for buying fuel and results in loadshedding. Instead of collecting bills stupid govt is wasting money on more and more projects.

Electricity problem, clean water problem, childrens education (1 in 3 out of school), lack of medical healthcare for poor, unemployment problem, Major corruption problems. What have you given us? As soon as ramzan arrived the prices of all food items went up. We are paying too much for Petrol while people all over the world are enjoying the benefits of low price of crude oil. Your nephew Abid Sheer Ali few days ago was bragging about power generation being highest in the history of Pakistan. Why is he not fired from his position yet?

Eversince electricity got nationalized and Pakistan Federation distributes power to Provinces, we'll continue to have loadshedding with no solution. Pakistanis! Beware and watch now, there's going to be another third bailout of half a billion rupees revolving debt to benefit the private power companies.

@Ali So true. However they would only allocate 10-20Billion for Neelum hydropower when they just spent nearly 50B on Islamabad metro. That money could and should have been used for power infrastructure. Neelum should have been finished by 2014/2015 but now we are talking 2017. If we have so much trouble finishing up a midsize project, we can perhaps say goodbye to Bhasha and many other hydel projects on paper, as this government is incapable of setting the National priorities.

I suggest that to express solidarity with the poor masses, they should voluntarily ask to shut down the electric feeders in Jati Umra and Raiwind so they can feel the pain.

@BB All you have to do is shutdown ALL commercial activity during those times -- it is easy enough that some air conditioners are cutoff during loadshedding times by a relatively simple remotely controlled 'meter'. So majority of the people have 'some' power to run fans and lights, and those who 'want' A/Cs can operate some of them.

First you need to study the patterns of Electron supply in every region based on the usage.
Secondly two years three months have passed all power projects awaiting release of money. Metro is very important but power is priority ; release funds.
Follow scheduled overhauls of power stations in winter.
Increase the efficiency of already installed units which is possible in 9-12 months.
Please form a team of experts to study and implement power plan.
I have studied the current plan simply its not workable and very poor

These painful power outages are due to deeply corrupt and pathetically incompetent political appointees during Zardari's term in office. I personally know several power engineers who left Pakistan during Zardari's tenure due to severe mismanagement and demand of widespread kickbacks throughout Pakistan's power stations and power ministry, ie, WAPDA, etc.

Mr. PM, talk is cheap. What you or the other governments have done to improve the infrastructure for the betterment of people. People in power since 1947 were/are too busy looting the ountry and filling their bank accounts and buying properties in UK, USA, CANADA etc. Where is your love for the country? Looks likes the politicians and the ruling class in India and Pakistan came from the same mould! Wonders will never happen. You are in power as head of the nation. Sir ,great photo of Mian Nawaz Sharif after listening on TV what the ministers said: Khawaja Asif said yesterday that shortfall of 3600 MW whereas Abid Sher claim today the shortfall is 6000 MW.They make fool of people and there own PM.
Pakistan is fed up of stupid and corrupt leadership.It's time to change leadership.

With a mere US $ 5 billion you can have 5000 MW of electric generation units and another US $2 billion for transmission. This country GDP is US $250 billion. Can't we solve this problem.Not possible as we all run for kickbacks and commission.

@Agitated I guess we all know value of politicians and their promises. There is big difference in making a promise and delivering results to thr people of the country. Everyone gets away by blaming the previous government. However, their seems to be no ending for public misery, lack of electricity, lack of clean water, lack of medical healthcare for poor people of the country. No wonder rich getting richer (and fatter), poor getting poorer, same old story.

If you don't allow him to express even his displeasure at power outages, shortage of water and gas, crumbling state of economy, runaway inflation, ever deteriorating law and order situation, rising unemployment amongst youth, lack of even basic health facilities, education in a shambles, tardy justice system, uncontrollable corruption, dying state organizations like Pakistan Steel/PIA etc., pray tell what else he would do as Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan ???????

Sir, without having sufficient supply how could any one can meet the demand? What do you expect from the secretary, miracles? First pay of outstanding dues by Federal and Provincial Government to LESCO, PEPCO and other such COS, so that they in turn could pay to Oil Supply Companies to keep the Wheel of Generating Electricity going.
Just expressing resentment is not the solution, it is just a routine.
