Sharjeel, Sami receive Pakistan call-up for Asia Cup, World T20

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday announced the inclusion of Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Sami in the national squad for the upcoming Asia Cup and World T20 tournaments, while Khalid Latif made it only to the World T20 squad.
The changes in the national side were made due to the injuries sustained by Babar Azam and Rumman Raees during the on-going Pakistan Super League (PSL), making the players unavailable for either of the tournaments.
According to a press release issued by PCB, Babar Azam suffered a fracture on his left forearm during a practice session with Islamabad United, CT scans revealed.
The right-handed batsman will be back after around three to four weeks according to the doctors.
Azam’s United teammate Ruman Raees suffered a grade one hamstring strain and is working to regain his fitness.
“After having looked at the performance of the players in the PSL, the selection committee along with Captain Shahid Afridi and Head Coach Waqar Younis decided to include Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Sami as replacements for injured Babar Azam and Ruman Raees respectively for both Asia Cup and World Cup,” said Pakistan chief selector Haroon Rasheed.
Sharjeel scored a 117 off 62 balls in the third qualifying final of the PSL against a strong Peshawar Zalmi attack on Sunday while Mohammad Sami has taken six wickets, giving away just 23 runs in his last two PSL outings.
“Since we have options available to bring in changes in our World T20 squad before the support period starting from March 8, 2016, it has also been decided to use this option and include Khalid Latif, who showed tremendous display of power hitting in the PSL matches.
Khalid Latif also hit form recently and has piled 190 runs in eight PSL matches so far.
“Khalid Latif could not be made part of the Asia Cup squad due to some technical reasons but would join the squad for the World Cup,” added Rasheed.
The Asia Cup and World T20 kick off on February 24 and March 16 respectively.

good thing, but the fear is will the captain deliver the results...if you look at Afridi in PSL his personal perf0rmance is not very impressive specially bating same sky high shots and out under 10...if this will stay like the same in Asia and Worlds T-20 we cannot expect good results for Pakistan...

A fracture of the forearm was revealed by ct scan? An xray could have done that. One tenth the price and one tenth the radiation exposure, and much more accurate than CT scans for detecting fractures.

At last some sense prevailed. Both Sami and Sharjeel should have been included from the very beginning. Even Ahmad Shehzad should have made the squad instead of Iftekhar. Pakistan's biggest concern is all-rounders Anwer Ali and Imad Wasim as these both did not play a single good hand in PSL.

Right decision!! Sharjeel doesn't have the best of the technique but then there is no other positive claim from elsewhere so he was rightly picked up. While Sami if goes on to use his brain properly could even emerge as the best bowler of the tournament. There was no doubt about his ability in the shorter version but he has failed to deliver on the expected lines only due to his mental fragility. Best of luck to both. Hope they deliver for Pak.

The fruit of PSL is now we have players like Muhammad Asghar, Nawaz, Sharjeel, Rauman Raees and Sami (mind you he has delivered some great spells). Well I beleive Babar Azam is a very talented player and I think Umar Akmal has got some of his form back and the management needs to decide his correct batting position

Sharjeel has weakness of being too much dependent on leg side. This was exploited by SL and he failed miserably. Sami is too old to be playing T20 but give him a chance if he can prove it.

And as for Mohammad Sami---he always give you his 110%---but you have to be by his side and control him on every delivery.---and that had been the failing of the test captains---they failed to get the best out of him---.
Just like the new zealand captain or the australian captain---there has to be someone talking to him after every ball---.
Don't let Mohammad Sami think---that is where the problem lies---. He is a doer---he needs to be told at every step and he has got pace---.
Pakistani captain needs to learn to use his assets better.

Still as long as Hafeez is in national side as a specialist batsman then anything is possible as far as selection is concerned.

Sami is the most misused player I've seen in recent times. He's still clocking at 145+ at an age of 35. All throughout his career he got dumb and unintelligent captains who had no idea how to use him. He got Wasim Akram at PSL and results came right away. Now T20 suits him, as he only has to bowl 4 overs max and he's a good fielder and reliable lower order batsman as well.

Yes Afridi is not performing well but please how can any one use the same logic to justify Sarfaraz's candidacy for captain.What is his record apart from scoring that century against Ireland and a couple of hundreds in tests in UAE when the team total was already par 300?He cannot hit big shots and is a bunny in seaming conditions as we saw in NewZealand.Please Pakistanis first analyze and then be so vocal about anything.

Sarjeel is a treat to watch in full flow. He definitely need to give himself a chance & get used to conditions b4 hi controlled aggression. Sami is the ONLY bowler in the history of cricket, besides Wasim Akram who has bagged a hat-trick both in a Test (against Sri Lanka) and T50 (against West Indies).
He also holds the world record - 8 wickets against New Zealand in 2001- for the most wickets by a debutante.
Some would say Sami was doing great until Karmran Akmal entered the scene and almost single handedly ruined the confidence of one of the brightest stars. Up until this day Kamran Akmal has the world record of dropping the largest number straight forward catches in first class cricket - a lot of those where off Sami's bowling. Onlyyesterday in the PSL match, Peshawar Zalmi Vs Islamabad United, Zalmi's bowler Tait was on a hat trick.Karram was behind the wickets and he dropped a sitter!! Kamran is tainted by betting allegation and yet he is selected to play first class cricket. And people are questioning the inclusion of proven record holders like Sharjeel and Sami!.

With the inclusion of Khurram Manzoor and Iftikhar, Pakistani team will be virtually playing with 13 players.
If PSL performance was the yard stick then Ahmad Shahzad was much better than Khalid Latif, specially in the most vital department of fielding.

Dificult to justify Khaled Latif's selection. 190 runs in 8 innings of PSL is not much to talk about. But I am very happy at inclusion of Mohammad Sami and Sharjeel. I just wish some day to see a Pakistani limited over team packed with Sami, Wahab, Aamir and Irfan but our batsmen are of such inferior quality that you can never count on them to score enough runs without playing all rounders in the team. Then even among our all-rounders, we don't have any proper batsman. Anwer Ali, Imad Wasim, Shoaib Malik, Afridi and Nawaz, no one performed exceptionally in this PSL.

@Umair Hasan Agreed, Sarfraz is hyped more than he is capable of. My concerns with Sarfraz are with his keeping while standing to a spinner. I have not yet seen a match where spinner's deliveries do not pop out of his hands. And he has dropped a lot of catches on spinners.
For those who are against Sami being included, Sami was never a bad bowler in limited over cricket. Actually his bowling figures in ODIs are very good. I think, he has better control on his line and length now while his speed is still at par with Wahab. He can score runs and is not afraid of diving to stop a ball.

They are really injured or it is mere an excuse of changing the squad. If so then it will be very pathetic and injustice for those who dropped from the team. They were selected on the basis of something, it was better to give them change before changing and chopping. PCB has lost its total credibility and become a farce. There is some thing called ethics. PCB is not following ethics. We had heard in social media about dropping those players before and those selectors have changed the squad according to public demand. If so then where is their own brain. How those players will feel who are dropped from the squad? I think pak team will be under their curse for sure.

Super performance in PSL and in local foramt of t20. He is still the fastest on the circuit beside 34 years of age.
Sami did not receive the support he need to be successful when he came to Pak team, he was also hitting 100 miles per hour, but our management did not handle this prodigy well at all.

Totally disagree with selection of Sherjeel and Sami. This is the same mistake selectors have been making for years. In case of Sherjeel, he has no caliber to build upon. Mohammad Sami is faster but these days no one is impressed by speed. One needs to be innovative and constantly looking for weaknesses of the batsman, instantly. In T20 matches fast bowlers are most vulnerable because fast bowl travels to the boundary with double the speed.

I can see lot of people stating change the captain but I wanted to tell all of them is there is no better captain available for pakistan other than shahid khan afridi.. Don't forget he took the team till semis on 2011 squad...

Finally.........PCB makes a little sense but still need to select some youngsters too. Between if PCB can make this work and performs well in both tournaments then surely PSL will be more popular in future too.
