US eyes accord on stealth fighter jets with UAE

WASHINGTON: The United States and the United Arab Emirates hope to have an initial agreement on the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to the Gulf state in place by December, as the Trump administration studies how to structure a deal without running afoul of Israel.
Sources close to the negotiations said the goal is to have a letter of agreement in place in time for UAE National Day celebrated on Dec 2.
Any deal must satisfy decades of agreement with Israel that states any US weapons sold to the region must not impair Israel’s “qualitative military edge,” guaranteeing US weapons furnished to Israel are “superior in capability” to those sold to its neighbors.
With that in mind Washington is studying ways to make the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 more visible to Israeli radar systems, two sources said.
Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz was due to meet his US counterpart Mark Esper in Washington on Tuesday.

What a waste of money , we have already seen UAE pilots in action over Yemen , they seriously need training on existing jets such as F16s before buying new more complicated jets
The money they are spending is aimed at pleasing the USA rather then their own national needs .

It is easy. They can sell them the jets and then refuse to deliver them and keep the money. Then they can compensate UAE by giving them soybean or corn for the same amount. They have already done that with others.

Even UAE get the latest jet fighters, my question is: who will fly them - of course, either American or Isreali pilots will fly them on UAE's behalf. I don't think UAE's pilots will have the ability to fly such advance fighters, as it needs courage, ability, advance training and mental attitude to understand advance technology.

@Nasir , Very good comment as buying expensive toys does not solve major problems of any country. UAE to buy expensive toys for what purpose or use against who? Chances are UAE would pay very good money for it and those expensive, high tech toys would stay in warehouse for long time, get rusted and become obsolete. If something goes wrong with those toys, chances are they would not know how to fix it and pay more good money to some one to fix it.
