PESHAWAR: Sixty inmates of the local Central Jail were injured, many of them seriously, when the police opened fire, following rioting by striking prisoners in which the Jail Superintendent was injured.

… Officials said the six-day-old strike had been completely crushed and the situation was now fully under control with all the prisoners inside their barracks. The strikers, who had earlier released 24 condemned prisoners from their cells, had demolished a wall to use the bricks as missiles. When the authorities told them their demands were unacceptable, the prisoners got rowdy and started throwing brickbats. ... Having failed to control the situation, firing was begun ... The Assistant Superintendent of the Jail ... told newsmen ... about 100 rounds were fired besides 20 to 30 tear gas shells. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s staff correspondent,] The Provincial Govern­ment last night [June 13] failed to reach any agreement with the labour leaders to end the present industrial unrest in the city. … Now the matter will be referred to President Bhutto, who will take the final decision.
