LONDON: The so-called State of Israel and Egypt silenced their guns in the south Palestine Negeb desert today [Jan 7] and prepared to negotiate an armistice. “Israel” ordered her land, sea and air forces to cease-fire at noon GMT after UN headquarters at Haifa had relayed … to Tel Aviv Egypt’s agreement to stop fighting. But a British Foreign Office spokesman declared in London … that more Jewish forces had crossed into Egypt … and were last reported to be still there.

The Negeb cease-fire coincided with fresh fighting between Jews and Iraqis on the central front near Ramat Hakovesh.

Observers in Tel Aviv thought it might die down quickly because the new Iraqi Government headed by Nuri es Said was believed to be more conciliatory than his predecessor.

[According to news agencies in Lake Success,] United Nations official sources said today that … Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower “had never been mentioned” for the post of administrator of the proposed Kashmir plebiscite. They were commenting on a Karachi report that the Pakistan Government had approved the appointment of the General for the post.
