GUJAR KHAN: A case of desecration was registered by the police on Sunday on the complaint of a local man, who claimed to have been handed torched copies of the Holy Quran in the Mahmoodabad area of Jhelum district on Saturday.

It was reported in the FIR, registered at the Kala Gujran police station, that a child from the neighbourhood came to the complainant’s house on Saturday evening and handed over a plastic bag containing burned copies of the holy book.

The complainant said the child’s family disclosed the bag was seen being carried by two unidentified women and a man on Friday evening. The police subsequently registered a case under sections 295-A and 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Meanwhile, the local chapter of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan announced they would hold a protest at Jada Chowk after Friday prayers if police failed to arrest the culprits.

Dawn tried to contact Jhelum DPO Nasir Mahmood Bajwa to seek details of the incident, but his staff said he was on leave.
