STAGNANT WATER

STAGNANT WATER: Despite being one of Karachi’s critical transit routes, the Nipa Flyover in Gulshan-i-Iqbal area gets inundated as soon as even a minor drizzle starts. Apparently, there is no drainage system in place because water keeps standing for days. The stagnant water on the spot is an issue that has been causing trouble to the residents of Block 10 for the last several years. Besides, the situation causes major disruptions in traffic flow, and poses a severe safety hazard to the commuters who use the route daily. The relevant authorities should take immediate action regarding a proper drainage system, and, subsequently, its regular maintenance and cleaning.

THALASSAEMIA WARNING: The number of thalassaemia cases in the pro-vince of Sindh has been on the rise, with the total number of patients, both in urban and rural areas, having been estimated to be alarming. Consanguineous marriages are considered one of the main reasons behind this medical condition. If concrete steps are not taken to generate mass awareness among people about the risks of such marriages, many more lives will continue to get destroyed.

BAHAWALPUR AIRPORT: It is rather disappointing that the city of Bahawalpur continues to suffer from a non-functional airport as well as lack of commercial flights. This not only reflects poorly on the city’s infrastructure, but also hampers its economic growth. Moreover, major businesses and property developments, like the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), are struggling, with the real estate market virtually dead now, and the sale and purchase of property coming to a standstill. The food industry is also suffering, as major chains are continuously shutting down their outlets. The city is losing its appeal owing to lack of connectivity, making it impossible for Bahawalpur to reach the standards of a thriving urban centre. The authorities must address the issue immediately.
