Police in Sindh

Published February 19, 2025

THIS is with reference to the letter “Sindh’s hospitality” (Feb 15). Which highlighted the failure of law-enforcement agencies, especially Sindh police. The state of law enforcement in the interior of Sindh is alarming. The police force is synony-mous with corruption and inefficiency.

The ineffectiveness of police is evident in the northern districts of Kashmore, Ghotki, Sukkur and Shikarpur, where dacoits operate with impunity. The menace of organised gangs engaging in kidnappings for ransom has created a climate of fear and insecurity. Despite repeated incidents, the police have failed to curb this lawlessness or protect the lives and property of the residents.

The failure is symptomatic of deeper issues within Sindh police, including inadequate training, political interference, and a lack of accountability. The glaring inability of the force to address the rising threats from dacoits, and to ensure public safety underscores the need for reforms.

The government must take immediate steps to overhaul the police by rooting out corrupt elements, ensuring trans- parency, and equipping the force with the necessary tools and training to combat crime effectively.

Undoubtedly, without such measures, the people of Sindh will continue to suffer under the burgeoning dual burden of corruption and insecurity. It is high time the authorities acknowledged the gravity of the prevailing issues, and acted decisively to restore public confidence.
