Border security

THIS is with reference to the report ‘Military vows to crush Balochistan terrorists, abettors’ (March 15). The fundamental responsibility of any nation’s military is to protect its borders and ensure the safety of its citizens from external threats.

In Pakistan, the army has historically extended its role beyond defence, delving into socioeconomic and political arenas. Recent incidents, however, have highli-ghted concerns regarding the military’s core focus, particularly in relation to border security and internal affairs.

One of the most alarming incidents highlighting potential lapses in border security is the recent hijacking of the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan.

The incident underscored the persistent threat from insurgent groups operating near the Afghan border, and raised questions about the effectiveness of border security measures.

There have been other such incidents over the last couple of years, emphasising the pressing need for robust border security measures to prevent militant infiltrations.
