Fighting terrorism

Published March 19, 2025 Updated 3 days ago

THE recent hijacking of the Jaffar Express has brought to the forefront the need for a revised approach to address the insurgency in Balochistan. The attack resulted in a significant loss of life, and raised questions about the effectiveness of the current strategy.

Despite a long history of military operations in the region, the insurgents have continued to carry out attacks, even reaching the provincial urban centres. The complex terrain of the region provides an advantageous battleground for the insurgents. In the light of this, the military must reassess its approach and consider new rules of engagement.

The question remains whether the military will opt for a kinetic approach, or provide space for political resettlement. The latter option may involve engaging in dialogue with separatist elements and addressing their grievances.

This approach could potentially lead to a more lasting resolution to the conflict. However, it is unclear what the new rules of the game will actually entail, and whether they will be effective in curbing insurgency and terrorism in the region.
