DADU: Dadu police have registered a case under relevant sections of Peca Act against 34 persons, who are accused of spreading fake news on social media about a bomb blast at SSP’s office targeting the SSP and 15 other police officers.

The case was lodged a day before by ASI Rajab Baloch against Aftab Jamali and his associates, 34 in all, after which police conducted raids in different parts of the town but Jamali and his accomplices had managed to flee by then.

SSP Amir Saud Magsi told Dawn on Wednesday that the miscreants would be brought to justice and dealt with according to the law. The FIR had been registered under the Peca Act at A-Section police station, he said.

He said the suspects were believed to be involved in spreading fake news about the bomb explosion by posting or sharing such content on social media. Under Section 20 of the Peca Act, sharing unverified news was also a criminal offense, he said.

He said that letters had been sent to FIA authorities seeking their assistance in the investigation, and 30 different raiding teams had been formed to arrest the suspects.

Police sources said that the main suspect Jamali had earlier been nominated in an FIR filed on similar charges by advocate Fahim Ghelo on March 1.
