MONTREAL, Aug 22: Pakistan’s surge in the 11th World Bridge Championships was effectively checked by United States and Great Britain Wednesday.

The five-member Pakistan team got off to a fine start beating Poland by full margin (25-0) in Group J of Power Rosenblum Cup League Tuesday. But later it drew with US and Britain in the subsequent matches.

As the Power Rosenblum qualifying stage is nearing completion, no team is mathematically safe but Nickell on 136 and Chagas on 135 are both 26 ahead of the second placed teams in their respective groups.

In the McConnell Cup, Baker’s American squad and Terraneo’s Austrians top their groups.

Meanwhile, the Executive Council of the World Bridge Federation (WBF) held elections for its president and office bearers Wednesday. José Damiani was re-elected President by acclamation.

Following the resignation of George Retek, Jean-Louis Derivery was appointed as Treasurer and Dan Morse as Honorary Secretary.

The Executive also approved the appointment of Mr. John Wignall as first Vice-President with Mrs. Joan Gerard and Messrs Patrick Choy, Panos Gerontopoulos, Ernesto d’Orsi, Mazhar Jafri, Jens Auken and George Retek as Vice Presidents.

Later Allana moved into second spot behind leader Maas. Only .3 Victory Point separate the top two positions. Allana had secured 123 VP as against Maas’123.3 VP.

Fourth round result:

Allana v Rousell 25-2 VP

Fifth round: Allana v Fredette 24-6

Sixth round: Allana vs Summers 19-11

Positions on Points Table after six rounds: Maas 123.3; Allana 123, Meitzer 105, Aagaard 101, Cope 93, Kaufmann 83, Lewclack 75, Summers 74, Roussel 52, Fradette 49.3
