LOS ANGELES: David Beckham is to captain the Los Angeles Galaxy for the first time in three years.

Bruce Arena, coach of the Major League Soccer club, decided that former England captain Beckham will wear the captain's arm band on Saturday when the Galaxy visit MLS rivals Real Salt Lake.

“Bruce has asked me to wear it, and I'll be proud to wear it,” said Beckham, who is in the final season of the contract that brought him to Los Angeles.

“It doesn't change the way I play. It's something you're very proud to wear, but you need more than that one leader on the field.”

Beckham took over as captain when he joined the team amid great fanfare in 2007.

However, he last captained the Galaxy on October 26, 2008. The armband was given to US midfielder Landon Donovan the following year.

Donovan will miss Saturday's game to be with the United States team hosting Argentina in a friendly at East Rutherford, New Jersey.
