ISLAMABAD, Jan 21: Qayaas, an Islamabad based rock band, has rocked the music scene by winning multiple categories in South Asia’s first-ever music awards.

The IndieGo Music Awards-2011 nominated bands from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. The winners are adjudged on the basis of acts and songs on originality, creativity and overall song entertainment value. The method for scoring took into account online voting as well as scores by global judges.

According to the announcement on the website, “Qayaas led the way with a clean sweep of all the rock awards, bagging Best Rock Vocalist, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Group.” Best Rock Vocalist award was won by Umair Jaswal and Qayaas also got runner-up for the ‘Most Mind Blowing Video’ for the song ‘Pukaar’. The Best Rock Group award titled ‘Best Freaking Act in Universe’ was also bagged by Qayaas.

Qayaas has risen slowly and consistently through the ranks in Pakistan’s music scene. It had made a space for itself in the music scene by winning awards like the Jack Daniel’s Rock Award (in association with Rolling Stone) for best Rock band in Pakistan. The competing bands included established names like EP and Call but Qayaas beat them all.

Then the band was nominated for the IndieGo awards which it also successfully proved its mettle in.

On their Facebook page, Qayaas celebrated the win and thanked all those who supported them: “It is a very satisfying and reflective moment for us,” Khurram Waqar (guitarist) said and added: “It is a really satisfying moment to see our music being recognised across the globe.” Plenty of thanks also went Eva Dawood Production’s way which has been supporting and working with Qayaas throughout their journey.

With such successes on their resume, all eyes will be on Qayaas to see what it accomplishes next.
